When we photograph familiar birds, we face the challenge of creating something new and interesting. Although our images might be very good technically, they are no different from the images we, or others, have taken. As photographers, we often wait for hours to capture a unique moment with a familiar subject. When we do, the result can be inspiring. The image below of a Black-capped Chickadee remains one of my favourites. I have more images of these birds than I care to admit, but this one is unique. Yes, the exposure, lighting and background are effective, but it is the bird's posture that makes the image so memorable.
