Some of you have noticed a Great Blue Heron foraging close to the pedestrian bridge at Jack Layton Park. Although juvenile birds can be fairly tolerant of humans, adult Great Blue Herons tend to be more wary.
I had an opportunity to observe and photograph this bird and it seemed to be missing some of its lunges for food. When I reviewed my images, I could see the problem. The heron had a damaged right eye.
It’s unclear whether this heron has a territory, a mate, or offspring. But the amount of time it’s spending in a small foraging area close to humans suggests it might be struggling. Time will tell.
