The Chorus Mystery

Updated: May 2, 2018

I’ve had many questions concerning the strange calls rising from the marsh in Jack Layton Park. So this afternoon, I went exploring. I can confirm that many of these calls are from male Pickerel Frogs. Their calls sound like low nasal snores, almost like cows.

Male frogs call to attract mates and deter other male frogs. Unfortunately, these calls can also attract predators. As evening approaches, additional calls can be heard in the marsh, and these are American Toads.

Here is one of the Pickerel Frogs I photographed this afternoon.
